Quick answer
There is no universal moka pot filter size. First identify which part you need: the flat perforated upper filter plate beneath the gasket, or the cup-shaped funnel basket that holds the coffee. Then match the manufacturer, exact model family, nominal cup size, and product generation before checking dimensions. For example, Bialetti lists a 64 mm upper plate for its named six-cup Moka Express family but 66 mm for its six-cup Venus, Musa, and Kitty family. A matching cup count alone does not establish compatibility.

Which moka pot filter do you need?
A conventional moka pot contains two parts that retailers and owners may call a filter:
- The upper filter plate is the flat perforated metal disc fitted into the underside of the collecting chamber. The gasket retains it around the threaded joint.
- The funnel basket is the cup-shaped part that sits in the lower chamber. It holds the unpressed coffee bed and has a tube extending toward the water.
They occupy different positions and require different measurements. A search for “six-cup moka filter” can therefore return a flat plate, a funnel, or a combined gasket-and-plate pack. Identify the part before using any chart.
The anatomy guide shows where both components sit in the brewer: how does a moka pot work?.
Bialetti upper filter plate sizes
The tables below reproduce current Bialetti New Zealand replacement-page values. They are family-specific references, not universal moka dimensions.
Moka Express-family upper filter plates
The source names Moka Express, Moka Induction, Dama, Mini Express, Mini Express Induction, and Break. Confirm that the current listing explicitly covers your exact model and size before ordering.
| Nominal pot size | Upper filter diameter | Compatibility note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cup | 47 mm | Use only for a named compatible model family. |
| 2 cup | 50 mm | Not the same plate as the stainless-family 2 cup. |
| 3 cup | 57 mm | Shared listed plate size with 4 cup. |
| 4 cup | 57 mm | Shared listed plate size with 3 cup. |
| 6 cup | 64 mm | Also the listed pack mapping for Brikka 4 cup. |
| 9 cup | 73 mm | Confirm the exact model family. |
| 12 cup | 82 mm | Confirm the exact model family. |
Bialetti NZ instructs owners of a two-cup Brikka to select the listed three-cup pack, whose plate is 57 mm. For a four-cup Brikka, it specifies the listed six-cup pack, whose plate is 64 mm. These are explicit mappings on that regional product page, not a rule for every Brikka generation.
The separate official 18-cup Moka Express plate listing gives 81 mm. That is one millimeter smaller than the 82 mm value in Brew Italia’s authorized-distributor table. Do not average the two values or infer a tolerance: confirm the current package or supplier listing for the exact market and product generation.
Venus, Musa, and Kitty upper filter plates
Bialetti NZ places these stainless-steel stovetops in a separate replacement family.
| Nominal pot size | Upper filter diameter | Compatibility note |
|---|---|---|
| 2 cup | 48 mm | Stainless-family part; aluminum-family 2 cup is listed at 50 mm. |
| 4 cup | 60 mm | Stainless-family part; named Moka Express-family 4 cup is 57 mm. |
| 6 cup | 66 mm | Stainless-family part; named Moka Express-family 6 cup is 64 mm. |
| 10 cup | 77 mm | Do not substitute a nearby 9- or 12-cup aluminum-family plate. |
These differences are small enough to make visual guessing unreliable and large enough to matter at the sealing assembly. “Four cup” and “six cup” do not define one filter diameter across moka designs.
Bialetti funnel basket sizes
Bialetti NZ sells funnels by model family but does not publish their dimensions on the pages reviewed. The following measurements come from Brew Italia, which identifies itself as an official Bialetti UK partner. Keep that source and market context attached to the numbers.
| Nominal pot size | Funnel rim diameter | Listed funnel length |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cup | 46 mm | 46 mm |
| 2 cup | 52 mm | 56 mm |
| 3 cup | 60 mm | 60 mm |
| 4 cup | 60 mm | 75 mm |
| 6 cup | 66 mm | 82 mm |
| 9 cup | 76 mm | 95 mm |
| 12 cup | 83 mm | 116 mm |
| 18 cup | 84 mm | 132 mm |
The guide applies this table to Moka Express, Dama, Moka Melody, Alpina, Break, Happy, Fiammetta, Iris, Moka Timer, Junior, and Morenita. The shared 60 mm rim listed for three- and four-cup funnels does not make the parts identical: their listed lengths are 60 and 75 mm.
| Nominal pot size | Funnel rim diameter | Listed funnel length |
|---|---|---|
| 4 cup | 57 mm | 65 mm |
| 6 cup | 66 mm | 73 mm |
| 10 cup | 78 mm | 90 mm |
These numbers describe the supplier’s replacement parts; they do not establish universal engineering dimensions for every moka pot carrying the same cup label.
Why model generation matters
A correct brand, family, and cup count may still be incomplete. Brew Italia separates Moka Induction funnels by product generation. It lists one group of original model codes and a different group for updated, Exclusive, and Dolce & Gabbana versions.
Bialetti NZ similarly separates funnels for pre-2020 Moka Induction, current bi-layer models, Brikka models from 2016–2023, and current 2024 Brikka models in its spare-parts catalog. The practical lesson is not to memorize those date labels as a global rule. Find the model code or exact generation and use the replacement listing for your market.
How to measure an upper filter plate
Let the moka pot cool completely and disassemble it according to its instructions. Once the plate is safely removed:
- Clean away loose coffee residue without bending the metal.
- Place a caliper across the widest outside edges, passing through the center.
- Measure the full disc, not the field of perforations.
- Rotate the plate and repeat the measurement. A bent or distorted plate may not produce one consistent diameter.
- Compare the result with a current part explicitly listed for the same model and cup size.
A ruler can indicate an approximate size, but a caliper is more useful when candidate parts differ by only one or two millimeters. Measurement supports identification; it does not override a model incompatibility or establish an undocumented tolerance.
How to measure a funnel basket
For a funnel, one diameter is not enough:
- measure the outside diameter of the upper rim through its center;
- record the overall dimension corresponding to the supplier’s stated length;
- compare the basket shape, rim profile, tube form, and exact product listing;
- check the model code and generation wherever the manufacturer separates revisions.
The three- and four-cup aluminum-family rows show why length matters. Both have a listed 60 mm rim diameter, yet their listed lengths differ by 15 mm. Buying on rim diameter alone can identify the wrong funnel.
Do not cut, flare, compress, or otherwise modify a funnel to make it fit. Do not force it into the boiler opening. If the old part is distorted or the listing does not define how its length was measured, ask the manufacturer or authorized supplier to identify it from the model markings and photographs.
Filter plate, gasket, and kit compatibility
Upper plates are commonly packaged with a replacement gasket. That does not make “ring and filter” a single measurement. The plate must match its seat, while the gasket has its own inside diameter, outside diameter, profile, and material.
For example, Bialetti NZ lists a 65 mm gasket outside diameter in both its three/four-cup aluminum-family row and its four-cup stainless-family row. Their upper plates are different: 57 and 60 mm. One shared gasket measurement therefore does not prove that the assemblies are interchangeable.
Use moka pot gasket sizes for seal ID, OD, material, and combined-kit checks. Check the plate and funnel separately from the sealing ring.
Signs a replacement filter may be wrong
Stop rather than forcing assembly if:
- the upper plate does not lie flat in its intended recess;
- the gasket cannot seat naturally around the plate;
- the plate shifts, buckles, or protrudes;
- the funnel rim will not sit normally at the top of the lower chamber;
- the funnel tube contacts or seats differently from the documented part;
- the chambers no longer screw together normally;
- fitting the part requires trimming, bending, stretching, or force.
Escaping water or steam at the center joint can involve an incorrect plate or gasket, but it can also result from residue, wear, damaged threads, a deformed rim, or assembly. Diagnose the location with why is my moka pot leaking? rather than assuming every leak is a filter-size problem.
When should a moka filter be replaced?
Sizing and replacement condition are separate questions. A correct metal part may still require replacement if it is cracked, permanently bent, heavily damaged, or no longer seats as the manufacturer intended. Conversely, discoloration alone does not prove that a dimension is wrong.
Inspect the filter holes and surfaces during normal cleaning, but do not enlarge perforations with pins or reshape the plate. Follow the exact manufacturer’s care and replacement instructions. For routine maintenance, see how to clean a moka pot; for seal wear and replacement, see when to replace a moka pot gasket.
Filter replacement checklist
Before ordering, confirm:
- whether you need the upper plate or funnel basket;
- manufacturer and exact model family;
- nominal cup size from the product marking or documentation;
- model code or generation where relevant;
- explicit compatibility on the current replacement listing;
- full plate diameter, or funnel rim diameter and listed length;
- every component in a combined gasket-and-filter kit;
- any conflict between your market’s official listing, packaging, and authorized supplier data.
If the evidence conflicts, do not average dimensions or choose the closest-looking part. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized parts supplier with the pot markings, measurements, photographs, and market of purchase.
